Race is on to win crime drive
PEEBLES police want teenagers to race sports cars in the town at high speed on Saturday night.
But the mini motors they are driving will only be six inches high.
And they hope the grand–prix event will wipe out vandalism.
Police officer, Nicola Page has organised the radio-controlled car race as part of a drive to educate youngsters about crime.
She told the Peeblesshire News: “We want to get lots of local kids together and hope to have fun as well as getting the anti-vandalism message across.
“We want them to see the effects of vandalism from different perspectives, showing them how destructive behaviour impacts on the community, the police and the local garages.”
Officers have set up their mini race–track at the Gytes sports centre, and local garages have teamed together with First bus to sponsor the event.
The first driver past the finish line will lift the winner’s trophy and get a real-life high-speed ride in a cop car.
Police will be gearing up to drive home their anti-vandalism message after the race.
Inspector Alan Crawford said: “This is one of the areas we need to keep concentrating on.
“It effects our daily life and takes away from the beauty of the town”
The event is open to all under-18’s and the engines will be starting up at 7pm tomorrow (Saturday) at the Gytes.
