Karine's in harmony at home
By David Knox
CELEBRATED songbird Karine Polwart is coming home to start her worldwide tour.
And she’s going to teach the town to sing.
The award-wining folk artist will perform in some of the top venues around the UK and further afield over the next few months.
But she has decided to kick it all off in Innerleithen.
The winner of the 2005 BBC Folk Award’s best album, best original song, and best newcomer, told the Peeblesshire News: “I seem to always be away from home these days, so it’s nice to have a few days at home in Walkerburn before the tour starts. Innerleithen was the perfect place to start my Scottish dates.
“I always enjoy playing in the Borders – I have so many good friends nearby.
“My second album has just come out and it’s a really busy time with promotions and touring. Ever since I won the awards it’s been non-stop.”
Since the release of her debut album, Faultlines, in 2004, Karine Polwart has quickly become one of the biggest names on the UK folk scene.
And she has been invited to play at some of the top traditional festivals over the summer.
But the philosophy graduate still finds time to pass on her skills and knowledge.
Karine added: “As well as playing in Innerleithen, I’m also hosting a harmony singing workshop in the afternoon. It’s free to anyone who is coming to the concert, and should be really good fun. Everyone will be welcome at the workshop – don’t worry if you don’t think you can sing.”
Sunday night’s concert in Innerleithen’s Memorial Hall, which features support from renowned singer-songwriter Chris Drever, starts at 7pm.
And Sunday afternoon’s workshop, also in the Memorial Hall, runs from 12.15pm to 2pm.
Some of Sunday’s proceeds go towards the cost of the forthcoming Innerleithen Music Festival.
Another folk legend is also appearing in Peeblesshire this weekend. Erig Bogle, who has lived in Australia for over 30 years, returns to his hometown of Peebles to perform at the High School tonight (Friday).
The anti-war campaigner’s back catalogue contains such gems as The Band Played Waltzing Matlida, The Green Fields of France and When the Wind Blows.
Tickets for Eric Bogle are still available from Sclaters Household.
