Glorious weather as Super Trooper judged Champion
ONLY the troop of entertainment ducks were disappointed with the weather at the Biggar Show last Saturday.
Once again there was a great turn-out at the popular farming event.
And one competitor who certainly went home smiling was Della Green from Dumfries, whose pony was judged Champion of Champions 2006.
The rising star, named Pickmere Super Trooper was picked out of five other show champions, despite only being in his first year out.
Proud owner Della Green told the Peeblesshire News: “We are absolutely thrilled to bits.
“He is such a star. Even though this is his first year he’s doing so well.
“He hasn’t been all that happy being so close to the cows today but generally he’s a super character.
“He’s very laid back.”
The winner’s latest prize comes after a run of success, having been picked as reserve Champion at the NCPA Cumbria and reaching the top six in all his classes at HOYs.
Pickmere Super Trooper was ridden by Della’s daughter 14-year-old Ashley who was also thrilled after Saturdays result.
As well as the winning Champion of Champions the day saw a high standard of livestock on show with a great turn-out of Shetland Sheep and Clydesdale horses.
The event was a memorable one for Agnes Jackson of Covington Mill Farm who has entered the Biggar Show since 1981 and won her first Champions trophy with Clydesdale, Boat Perfect Lady.
Children were also well entertained throughout the day with a host of fun events and performances.
Daring stunt ducks, The Drakes of Hazard, strutted round an obstacle course in the show ring after the Grand Parade of livestock.
And the afternoon wound down with the finals of the annual tug O War competition.
Robert Laird who took over the reigns as president last November was delighted with the success of his first show.
He told the Peeblesshire News: “Everything went very smoothly and I have been very proud at the amount of people who have congratulated the committee.
“The weather made all the difference and a lot of folk went home with smiles on their faces.
“As it was my first year I was obviously a bit apprehensive but next year will definitely hold no fear.
“We have a very experienced committee and there was a great variety of entertainment.
Numbers at the show were up on last year and far exceeded our expectations.
“I would like to thank all the spectators for turning up and making it all worthwhile.
“I look forward to seeing everyone back again next year.”
