AN industrial revolution is about to hit Innerleithen.

After decades of job losses and the decline of employment opportunities, a development firm is set to buck the trend.

Synergy Property Developments have been given the green light to construct eight blocks of industrial units on the site of a former mill.

And attract more than 20 businesses to the Peeblesshire town.

The planning application to build a new business park in the town was finally approved this week at Tweeddale Area Committee.

And work at the site to the south of the Clough Mills, off Traquair Road, is expected to begin early next year.

Local councilors and community leaders have welcomed the development which will lead to around 100 jobs arriving in Innerleithen.

Chairman of Innerleithen Community Council Ross McGinn told the Peeblesshire News: “We have supported this application from the start. It’s something we have been hoping for, for a long time.

“It will bring a lot of extra employment and that is always goood news.

“I just hope the units will get filled up quickly and we see it start to thrive.

“The quicker the better for Innerleithen.”

The Industrial complex will provide a total of 22 industrial and commercial units, ranging in size from 70 sq-metres up to 200 sq-metres.

And despite 18 objections from neighbouring residents councilors are satisfied with the finalized plans tabled by the applicant.

Ross added: “Although some local residents have had concerns, many of the problems have been resolved and it seems that overall the advantages for the wider community outweigh the disadvantages.”
