POLICE are hunting for opportunist joy riders with a conscience.

The thieves have twice stolen cars from the Jedburgh area and later returned them undamaged.

But another theft ended with a Boxing Day collision just outside Innerleithen on the A72.

And officers are hoping to trace two or three teenagers seen walking from the crash site.

A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police said: “The strange thing about these thefts is that on two occasions the cars have been returned.

“We believe that all three thefts may be connected.

“There was a collision outside Innerleithen involving a stolen Mini from the Jedburgh area, and the occupants were last seen walking back towards the town.

“They have not been traced.”

The blue mini was the first vehicle to be snatched – from Jedburgh’s Waterside Road on Boxing Day evening.

And it crashed near Innerleithen at 9.15pm.

A second vehicle – a Primera – was taken at Friars in Jedburgh last Saturday evening after the keys were stolen from within a house.

But the car was later returned undamaged with the keys left inside.

And a similar crime took place the following morning when a Citreon Xsara, which had the keys left in the ignition, was taken from a driveway in Lanton Road – only to be returned nearby a few hours later.

The police spokeswoman added: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been in Innerleithen at around 9.15pm on Boxing Day and seen the youths from the Mini.

“We are also asking people to ensure they don’t leave their keys in the ignition of their vehicles.”
