Inside a wooden wigwam.

IF you don’t fancy camping in the cold and wet, but love the great outdoors, you might be in luck.

Green accommodation could be coming to Peebles.

A planning application has been lodged with Scottish Borders Council to erect 24 heated timber wigwams at Glentress just behind The Hub.

The owner of Linnburn Farm, Ian Ritchie, said he had put a lot of thought into his plans.

He told the Peeblesshire News: “I have been thinking about doing this for around five years.

“The idea was to provide mountain-bikers with an affordable, comfortable place to stay.

“Tourism plays an important part in the economy of Peeblesshire and this would expand the different types of accomodation on offer.

“And I wanted to make it a green product. So I would use local timber to build the wigwams.

“They would look very natural and blend in well with the surrounding landscape.

“I don’t want to create an eyesore.”

The chalet-like buildings sleep up to five and will come with double-glazed windows.

Alongside the wigwams, an application has been forwarded to construct a toilet, shower block and laundry and a recreational meeting area.

Secure facilities for bike storing would also feature.

They would be situated on land north of Falladale on grazing land that is currently occupied by sheep.

The Planning Department at Scottish Borders Council said it would consider the application carefully before making a decision.
