Burgh Hall out to silence its doubters

THE BURGH HALL in Peebles has staged a colourful comeback.
Only a year or so after it was threatened with becoming the town’s next library it has received its very own birthday makeover.
Around £20,000 has been splashed out on the 149-year-old hall within the Chambers Institution.
And further plans to lift the roof to reveal the period features above are also being considered.
Local councillor Catriona Bhatia is delighted with the new décor. She told the Peeblesshire News: “The Burgh Hall has been lacking investment for the past 10 years because of all the uncertainty and discussions about its future.
“We kicked into touch the ideas of it becoming the library and other options that were put forward.
“The new paintwork and flooring look splendid and I hope we can find the money some day soon to take away the false ceiling.
“The hall is really well used and an important part of the community.”
Painting firm Mackison’s carried out the butter yellow and pale blue
decorating while the Castle Warehouse laid new flooring.
Councillor Bhatia added: “It is important to use local companies when we can – and I am really pleased with the standard of work.”
Plans to celebrate the hall’s 150th birthday are already in the pipeline.
And taking away the false ceiling may be the perfect present for the ancient building.
Councillor Graham Garvie said: “Reinstating the original cornice ceiling is something we should be aiming for.
“I am pleased that we at last managed to secure the resources for the hall to be redecorated. I am delighted with the work that has been done and I’m sure everyone will be as impressed as I am.”
The Burgh Hall was built by Dr Chambers after he acquired the surrounding buildings in 1857. Along with the new hall he made considerable alterations to the other buildings surrounding the Quadrangle.
The Chambers Institution, including the Burgh Hall, was officially opened on August 11, 1859.
