NOT even the Peeblesshire News can stand by its vows to get everything right.

Last week’s front page story about the opening up of the Cross Kirk in Peebles for wedding ceremonies for the first time in centuries was out of date – by five years.

Despite our investigation team, along with Historic Scotland and the local Registrar, not being able to find any records of marriages taking place within the 13th Century landmark, we were wrong.

In 2003 storytellers John and Noreen Hamilton tied the knot at the Cross Kirk on a beautiful sunny June 6.

The happy couple even sent us a photograph of their big day to prove that they beat soon-to-be-wed Donna Thomson and Warren Palacci by five years.

John told the Peeblesshire News: “We were informed at the time that we were the first wedding in the Kirk for centuries.

“For us the Kirk was a natural choice as it had been holy ground since the Bronze Age and was a favourite spot for both of us.

“We wish Donna and Warren all the best and can assure them that we have had a very happy marriage starting at the Kirk.”

The second wedding to take place at the Cross Kirk in centuries will take place on May 31.
