'Our success is because we inspire, challenge and empower our students'
By David O'Leary
Peebles High School has recently scooped a Scottish Education Award for Most Enterprising Secondary School in Scotland 2008.
It was awarded the prestigious award for its activities to develop students enterprising and entrepreunerial skills through a plan, do and review approach.
For the last 4 years, the school has created opportunities for all pupils to develop positive attitudes and relevant skills for their future in either the workplace or Further and Higher Education.
This has been achieved through the delivery of enterprise courses in S1 and S2 and from S3 – S6 creating real life contexts in which the pupils have been challenged and empowered to successfully work in teams, take risks, solve problems, make decisions and embrace responsibility.
Peebles High School Rector John Brown said: "The Award ceremony programme stated ‘This school in the small Borders town has big ambitions for its pupils’. That is the essence of our education programme - our success is because we inspire, challenge, and empower our students to achieve success in whatever they undertake."
Brian Mahler, Principal Teacher Enterprise said: "This is a wonderful accolade which recognises that enterprising teaching and learning contexts provide children with opportunities to develop the necessary transferable skills, employability skills and learning skills required in life.
Director of Education & Lifelong Learning Glenn Rodger said: "This is a really impressive
achievement by Peebles HIgh School which should be commended by everybody in the Borders. This is a first class example of enterprise working and sets the standard for schools in Scotland."
Lawrence Alexander, SBC's Enterprise development manager added: "This indicates how all our schools have really developed their enterprise work over the apst four years through 'Determined to Succeed' and that we are a leading authority nationally in enterprise education."
