Highland fling for locals at the Show
By David O'Leary
Borderers scooped a whole host of glittering prizes at the recent Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh.
David Cuthbertson and his daughter Caroline, of Ivanhoe Road, Peebles scooped first prize in the Supreme Highland livestock category.
They were folllowed by David and Jane Dixon, of Hamilton Hall, West Linton who twon he Best Junior and Best Reserve junior prizes.
James Bogle of Wirebridge Cottage, Innerleithen Road, Peebles was doubly delighted after scooping the overall winner of the honey and heather honey sections.
Mr Dixon said: “It’s great to win any ticket at the Highland Show and to win two firsts is really special. This year completed a hat-trick at Junior Champion for me over the past five years.
“I’m very fortunate to have won because i got alot of support from the Adamsons, the Winkles and the Hammond-Chambers. It was also magic to see David and Caroline Cuthbertson win the Supreme Highland category and very well deserved.”
Mr Bogle, who has kept bees now for over 45 years, was finally relieved to have won, having been runner-up on numerous occasions.
He said: “I’m delighted and also very proud to have finally won. I’ve won the Scottish National title in Dundee for the last three years running and i can now add this win to it.
“I’ve always been pipped at the post in the past so this is a great pleasure.”
After 45 years James is still excited about beekeeping and is still learning new aspects of his craft.
He said: “After so long people would think that you know it all but there is still lots to find out and new aspects that reveal themselves. These awards are a big reward after alot of hard work.”
The winners’ joy was dampened somewhat by the shocking death of a three year-old boy on the opening day of the show.
Ben Craggs was thought to have been swinging on chains linking concrete bollards in a car park when one of the 3 feet-high bollards toppled onto him and hit his head.
The boy, who was an only child, was at the show with his parents Dawn and Jonathan, from Sedgefield, County Durham , who were exhibiting livestock.
