Aaron strikes gold at the Games
By David O'Leary
Plucky local youngster Aaron Gray has scooped gold at the recent British Transplant Games in Sheffield.
The twelve-year-old, from Peebles, received a liver and small bowel transplant when he was just three and has undergone two heart operations.
Aaron attended the event for the fifth time with his mum Catriona, winning gold in the sports hall athletics and silver in the tug of war.
These will now be added to his previous medal haul of two silvers and two bronze.
The Games have been staged annually since 1978 in 15 host cities and over the past 30 years has grown to a four-day event for over 600 competitors and nearly 1000 supporters.
Catriona said: “He’s over the moon and I’m absolutely delighted for him. On the way down he told me that he’d had a dream that he was going to win a gold. His team from Birmingham’s Children’s Hospital also won Best Children’s Liver Transplant team and jointly won Best Children’s team.
“It was an early birthday present because he will be celebrating his 12th birthday this Saturday. And will sign up to be a donor himself, as in Scotland the legal age of consent is 12 yrs old.
“We always have a supply of information and organ donor cards if anyone would like some and can be contacted via Tel. 723887 or info@transplantkids.co.uk”
Aaron is also at present looking for sponsorship to cover his future participation in the Games and those wishing to help can do so by contacting Catriona.
