DRINKS Licenses across the Peebles area can once again be processed by the Licensing Board after the committee appointed a new chairman.

At a meeting on Wednesday, the Licensing Board (West Division) elected councillor Willie Archibald as chairman following the resignation of councillor Carolyn Riddell-Carre from the post last month.

It came after the previous meeting was cancelled as committee members clashed over who should take the vacant chairperson’s seat.

At the meeting, held in Galashiels, Councillor Archibald said: “The committee apologises to those businesses affected by the last meeting.”

However, he failed to confirm the reasons for the previous week’s cancelled meeting, saying only: “The members of this board take their responsibilities very seriously. We are dedicated to the matters of this board.”

The board then granted a drinks license to Walkerburn businessman Neil Ballantyne, who had turned up at last week’s meeting hoping to be granted an off-sale license, only to be told at the last minute that the meeting had been cancelled.

Councillor Archibald said: “We approve the application and wish Mr Ballantyne good luck and all successes with his business.”
