THE soaring cost of eggs is no yoke for the largest independent egg producer and packer in Scotland.

But West Linton-based Glenrath Farms Ltd, one of the biggest employers in Peeblesshire, insisted they are still cracking value for money.

The average cost of an egg rose from an average of 15 pence in June last year to 22 pence in June this year.

And, as the credit crunch bites, egg-perts ruffled a few feathers by predicting more tough times ahead fuelled by soaring food prices.

Glenrath chairman John Campbell, who supplies eggs to some of the country’s biggest supermarkets, told the Peeblesshire News: “The price of eggs had to go up because of the fact that the cost of feeding the chickens, above all else, has nearly doubled in a year.

“And of course the cost of electrcicity, fuel and all the other things have risen dramatically too.”

But he added: “The supermarkets have been very fair with us and eggs are still very good value for money.”

Meanwhile, Glenrath Farms confirmed work is set to start on its latest egg farm at Blythbank, West Linton.
