£9.5 million elderly housing development planned
By David Knox
PLANS for a £9.5 million elderly housing development in Peebles have been submitted with Scottish Borders Council.
Eildon Housing hope to build 59 apartments at the council’s current roads depot on George Street.
And it is expected the project, which is part of the Peebles Affordable Housing Strategy, will get the thumbs up from planners before the end of the year.
Lawrence Cox from Eildon Housing told the Peeblesshire News: “We have worked very closely with Scottish Borders Council’s social work department on what is required from these apartments.
“We want to build a sustainable development for the future that will meet the demands of the elderly in the Peebles area.”
As well as 22 general needs flats the complex will also be home to 37 high dependency units.
And all of the 59 two-bedroom apartments will feature the very latest in assistance technology such as movement sensors and alarms.
The four blocks at George Street will eventually become home to Dunwhinny Lodge Care Home’s residents.
And they will also provide decant accommodation for Tweedbridge Court residents while Margaret Blackwood Housing carries out refurbishments.
Mr Cox added: “The George Street development is part of a much wider housing strategy for Peebles.
“Much of the preparatory work such as flood risk assessments have been done but we will have to wait until the roads depot vacates the site before any work can begin.”
Scottish Borders Council plans to move its roads depot to Eshiels in March.
And a projected starting date of next May has been penciled in for work at the George Street site.
Eildon Housing expect the 59 apartments will be completed and ready for residents by October 2011.
