Cusiter keen to team up with Townsend

LIONS scrum-half Chris Cusiter can’t wait to team up with Scotland legend Gregor Townsend to have a crack at the Celtic League big-guns.

The 23-year-old, speaking exclusively to the Border Reivers, believes the Borders can beat off Edinburgh and Glasgow to finish as top of the Scots in the forthcoming campaign.

He said: “Steve Bates has made some great signings over the summer, and I believe we are a much stronger team than we were last season.

“Gregor Townsend will be great for me, having him at number 10 will help my game. He has so much experience and I hope we can build up a good half-back partnership.”

Townsend and Cusiter did play a couple of times together two years ago for the Borders, before the much traveled stand-off departed for South Africa.

And while he has been away, the youngster from Aberdeen has developed into one of the best scrum-halves in world rugby.

But Cusiter is realistic when it comes to his team’s chances of Celtic glory.

He added: “There is really good feeling within the Borders squad and we will do well. But the Celtic League is really tough, and our aim has to be to finish the top Scottish team. This is something we can achieve.”

Cusiter was at Netherdale on Wednesday to announce VisitScotland’s three-year sponsorship deal with the country’s professional clubs.

VisitScotland has paid a six-figure sum to have its name on the sleeves of the Border Reivers, Glasgow Warriors and Edinburgh Gunners. The deal also includes perimeter board advertising at the three grounds.
