Referees on immediate strike
BORDERS referees have gone on immediate strike after the SRU made its Development Officer, Bill Calder, redundant.
At a meeting in Melrose on Wednesday night, angry members of the Border Referees Society unanimously voted to withdraw their support from matches.
The decision will hit tomorrow’s National League and BT Cup matches.
In a statement issued to the “Peeblesshire News” after the meeting, attended by around 40 members, the Society said: “The decision was taken that all referees appointed by the Society will be withdrawn for all matches as of tonight until such time as meaningful discussion takes place with senior officials from Murrayfield with a view to the re-instatement of the Borders Referees’ Development Officer.”
Norman Douglas, the Borders representative, said: “It is unfortunate and I can seen where the referees are coming from. I will be having talks today with Gordon Mackie (SRU chief executive).”
Society chairman Alan Lyall was not available for comment.
It is thought that this is the first time ever that Borders referees have taken strike action.
