Ticket price U-turn
AFTER fury over the cost of watching Border Reivers this season, the pro team management has moved quickly with a new pricing strategy.
Concession ticket for OAPs (over 60s) have been re-introduced while children under five years of age will be admitted free.
The decision follows crowds of under 1000 for the Celtic League clash with Llanelli Scarlets and only just over that mark for the game with the Ospreys.
Now John Thorburn, the Reivers’ new Business Manager, has told the “Peeblesshire News”: “After an extensive consultation process, we have taken on board the feedback from the public and have decided to make changes with immediate effect.”
That includes tonight’s clash with League leaders Edinburgh Gunners.
There will be compensation for OAPs who have bought season tickets with offers of match tickets for Scotland’s international against Samoa, an £80 gift voucher or a £50 cash refund.
There will be a full refund for season tickets purchased for under-fives.
While the Reivers prepare to face the Gunners, Steve Bates’ men will be eyeing up one of the game’s biggest crowd-pullers in the New Year.
Jonah Lomu has signed a seven-month contract with Cardiff Blues in a bid to revive his international career – and will, barring injury, face the Reivers when the Welsh club heads north in January.
The winger had a kidney transplant in June 2004 after suffering renal failure brought on by the rare illness nephritis, and is determined to win back the All Blacks jersey.
“It will be great for the game to have Lomu appearing at Netherdale,” said Borders chairman Norman Douglas.
And Bates added: “It’s great for the Celtic League that it can attract players like Lomu. I am just glad I am not playing!”
Meanwhile, Bates has prepared his side to tackle Gunners, the Celtic League leaders, after their win over Glasgow and Ulster’s defeat by Leinster.
The team was due to be announced after we went to press.
Gunners will be led by former Gala man Chris Paterson, who will return to Netherdale and, like Lomu, should be a crowd-puller in his own right.
The game kicks off at 7.30 p.m.
