TWEEDDALE tornado Tommy Ashby has stormed to victory Down Under.

The Innerleithen sprinter flew to Melbourne in January to prepare for the professional running season.

And has already made an impact – reaching three 400-metres finals and also winning the 120-metre race at Keilor during the weekend.

The 18-year-old gap-year student is being trained in Australia by renowned coach John Henry.

Ashby’s UK coach Charlie Russell told the Peeblesshire News: “I have spoken with Tommy a couple of times since he went to Australia and he’s really enjoying himself.

“He’s been competing for three weeks and has qualified for three finals, all at 400 metres.

“He went one better at the weekend by winning the 120 metres at the weekend.”

Ashby, who finished fourth in the New Year Sprint at Mussselburgh, is aiming for gold at the world-famous Stawel Gift meeting in April.

And is hoping to return to the UK to compete at his hometown’s St Ronan’s Games in July.
