Project with big impact
By Atholl Innes
FORMER Borders Reivers Academy manager Richie Gray and the boss of GB Telecom, Gordon Brown, are planning what Gray says could be the biggest project to hit the Borders in years.
Brown a, previous sponsor of the Border Reivers, and Gray . pictured below, have been discussing the plans for some time.
And now Gray, who has left the Reivers, and turned down a new post with the Scottish Rugby Union, has teamed up with Brown to drive it ahead.
Their lips remain sealed at this time, but Gray revealed that it will promote the arts, culture and sports in the Borders.
“We have always discussed this idea to do with his company, and if it does come to fruition, it will have one of the biggest single impacts on the Borders,” said Gray.
“It is something we have discussed at length. “It may come to a point where we have to make a decision.
“It is an idea myself and Gordon have had, something we are still looking at, and if it happens, it could make one of the biggest changes to sport, arts and culture in this district.
“It is a great concept and, in a couple of months’ time, we could be calling a press conference to discuss our plans.”
Gray, a qualified PE teacher, saw two unique changes in rugby…the change-over from the amateur to the pro game and he was also involved in the development of the Borders Reivers twice.
“I was offered posts with the Union, but decided to ake a month off and take stock,” he said.
“I would like to give something back to the Borders. I have been all over the world, seen so many lovely places, and I think we in the Borders are so lucky as to where we live.
“There comes a time when you say to yourself, ‘where are you going and what are you doing?’ That time has come.
Gray will continue to pursue other interests in the media and coaching.
“I have a great 13 years,” he said, “ but I am looking forward to the change although I will still be supportiing the game.”
