Vintage Rovers on top in a thriller

Printer Print Article

Rovers travelled down to Berwickshire to take on a strong Chirnside team and came away with the points after an entertaining tussle.

The visitors started well, taking control of the game and on 6 mins opened the scoring with a great strike into the top corner from Craig Lowrie.

Rovers were moving the ball about with confidence now and shortly afterwards got their second after a goalmouth stramash the ball broke to Gary Hastie who finished well.

Chirnside came back well and forced a number of corners but found the Rovers defence hard to break down.

The second half saw more of the same from the visitors and they went three up just after the break when great football from Hastie and Somerville set up Colin Smith who lashed the ball into the net from 8 yds.

Chirnside bounced back when a looping effort found the back of the Rovers net to reduce the deficit but this was`nt going to stop the visitors having their day and a great run from Somerville saw his shot parried by the keeper into the path of Hastie who cracked the ball into the roof of the net for his second of the game.

Chirnside once again came back at the visitors, this time a well struck free-kick found the back of the net but this did`nt deter Rovers and they rounded off the scoring when Somerville outpaced the Chirnside defence, despite a crude effort to bring him down and found the net confidently with a tidy finish to seal the game.
