Brotherly boost for challenge campaign
By David Knox
PEEBLES are hoping some brotherly love will guide them to silverware this season.
Mark Lamb has already landed former Brechin midfielder Scott Devlin to spearhead the campaign.
And he is now on the verge of adding his 20-year-old younger brother, Paul, to the Whitesome Park squad.
The promising striker is currently with crisis club Whitehill Welfare, who last week lost manager Rab Findlay.
And Lamb hopes the disquiet at the Rosewell club will help convince the youngest Devlin to head down the road to Peebles.
Mark told the Peeblesshire News: “Signing Scott was a great boost for the club, as several bigger teams had come in for him, and it would be fantastic if we also signed Paul.
“Paul is a real talent and he has shown an interest in coming.”
Peebles sit top of their League Cup section after beating Edinburgh Athletic on Saturday.
And a victory tomorrow at home against Civil Service Strollers would likely set up a decider for reaching the semis with Spartans in a fortnight.
Lamb acknowledges his team is improving but fears Premier League runners-up Spartans may still be too good. He added: “The Civil Service game will be hard but I feel we now have the players to beat them.
“We don’t think we can win the League Cup – not with Spartans in our group – but we have been delighted so far with the form we have shown. The league will be our priority and we hope to keep improving throughout the campaign.”
Vale of Leithen suffered a quick setback last week as they try to reach the cup semi finals.
Losing two goals in the opening ten minutes against champions Annan Athletic meant Stuart Robertson’s team left Galabank without any points.
And nothing short of a win against Heriot-Watt University will keep Vale in contention of topping their section.
Robertson told us: “We competed well at Annan, and after losing the two goals we were just as good as them.
“We’re still in with a chance of progressing – the section is wide open but we will have to win our last three games.
“Heriot-Watt are a good footballing team but we are going up there looking for all three points.”
Vale welcome back Richard Edge, Aaron Somerville and Mel Graham for the trip to Riccarton.
Leithen Rovers will have to wait an extra three days to start their defence of the Border Amateur Division A crown. Alan Notman’s side face Hawick Legion, who have requested a midweek fixture instead of playing tomorrow.
Notman lost the influential trio of Mark Wilson, Colin Smith and Aaron Somerville in the summer.
But the manager will be hoping teenager Aaron Brunton can help ease their departure. Notman said: “We have signed young Aaron who was with Hearts until recently. He’ll want to move onto a bigger club in time but we can give him games until that happens.”
Rovers have also added goalkeeper Ross Davidson and veteran defender Fraser Leckie to their squad.
Promoted Peebles Amateurs have a home tie at Kerfield tomorrow against Newtown, while relegated Tweeddale Rovers travel to Hawick Legion Rovers.
All of tomorrow’s games kick off at 2.30 p.m. and Tuesday’s match at Victoria Park between Leithen Rovers and Hawick Legion start at 7 p.m.
