Missed penalty: 10 men: five goals: Peebles simply had it all
By George Wilson
Peebles FC 5, Ormiston FC 0
Peebles got back onto the promotion track with a comfortable win against bottom-of-the-table Ormiston in their Tyreman East of Scotland League first division match last Saturday.
Peebles certainly had by far the better of the exchanges over the piece, with Peebles keeper Gary Louttit hardly having to make a save during the 90 minutes.
Peebles even had the luxury of missing a penalty kick, and of playing with ten men for the last quarter of the match.
Paul Russell had been sent off, while still running out convincing winners at the end of the day.
Peebles posed an early threat when Scott Devlin sent the ball narrowly over the Ormiston crossbar with a flashing angular shot from 18 yards.
Play continued to rage from end to end with neither side able to create any clear cut scoring chances until Peebles managed to break the deadlock after 18 minutes.
A Scott Devlin through ball sent Michael Moffat on a menacing run down the right.
He crossed the ball into the Ormiston box and the defenders failed to clear the danger.
The loose ball broke kindly to Kerr Dodds, who neatly slipped in through to Paul Devlin and he coolly drilled the ball past a helpless James Daly with a crisp shot from 8 yards into the far bottom right hand corner of the Ormiston net.
Peebles continued to press forward as, from a Dodds pass, Scott Devlin was just off-target with a terrific shot from 20 yards.
Moments later, from a Scott Devlin corner kick on the right, Paul Russell struck the Ormiston crossbar with an angular shot from 10 yards before the ball rebounded away to safety.
Peebles eventually added a second goal after 29 minutes.
Aaron Paterson’s free kick from the left to the far post picked out Paul Russell, who beat Daly all ends up with a header from close range.
Peebles continued to pose the bigger threat as, after latching onto a hefty clearance from his keeper, Scott Devlin sent the ball narrowly over the Ormiston crossbar with a cheeky chip shot from 20 yards.
Following a neat build-up down the left, Paul Devlin passed the ball to Scott Devlin, who promptly fired it just over the Ormiston crossbar.
Then, at the other end, nearing half time, Louttit comfortably saved a 25 yards free kick attempt from Paul Lynch.
Ormiston made a promising start to the second half with a spell of pressure before it was back to business as usual.
Dodds flicked on a Scott Devlin right wing cross to Paul Devlin who lashed the ball just over the Ormiston crossbar from 18 yards.
But 12 minutes after half-time, Peebles missed a golden opportunity to increase their lead.
Daly brilliantly saved a penalty kick attempt from Scott Devlin after Chris Dickson had up-ended Euan Campbell inside the Ormiston box.
When Ormiston replied both Mark Leslie and Craig Fisher were well off target with their scoring attempts.
But then, at the other end, from a Paterson left wing cross, Moffat sent in a splendid header from 8 yards which brought out a fine diving save from Daly.
Peebles were reduced to ten men in the 66th minute after Paul Russell was sent off following a late two-footed, bone-crunching tackle on Craig Fisher in midfield.
Ormiston were now enjoying their best spell of the match although without really posing a threat to the Peebles defence.
Peebles notched up a third goal against the run of play, after 72 minutes.
From a free kick out on the right, Moffat neatly slipped the ball across to the waiting Paul Devlin who gave a wrong-footed Daly no chance with a deflected shot from 20 yards.
Peebles were back on top, and then scored a fourth goal three minutes from full time.
A Campbell through ball sent Peebles substitute Andrew Martin racing into the Ormiston box before he coolly drilled the ball past an exposed Daly with a well placed angular shot from 12 yards into the far bottom left hand corner of the Ormiston net.
Moments later, Paul Devlin set up a shooting chance for Campbell who was foiled by a splendid two handed diving save from Daly.
Then Peebles went nap one minute into injury time when, from out on the right, Martin neatly laid the ball off to Euan Campbell, who promptly slammed it home with a low angular shot from 14 yards.
It had been an excellent all-round team performance by Peebles, who made sure that they didn’t slip up on a potential banana skin.
