Biggar demolition job on Aberdeen
By Jack Nixon
Aberdeen Grammar 20, Biggar 40
BIGGAR ensured the promotion race in Premiership Two will go down to the wire when spurred by the news that Selkirk had beaten Jedforest 30 - 23, went on to ultimately demolish Aberdeen Grammar.
The win was not gained without a fight, as conceded by coach Aaron Collins.
''We were put through the mill in the first half, but a 15 man performance saw us through in the end.
“Collecting a bonus point was just great,'' said the affable Collins who even had time to express his sympathy for the home coach.
''I feel sorry for Mike O'Donovan. Grammar deserved better and gave us a run for our money in the first half.'' he said.
Collins refused to pick out any one individual after the five try win, insisting it had been a team effort. '
'They showed a lot of character after being through a difficult time what with injuries and poor results.
“Our fate is now in our own hands after this result,'' said Collins.
The home side belied their lowly position in the league going into the break 15 - 11 to the good, but never fully able to shake off the Hartreemill challenge.
But while Collins was reluctant to pick out any of his charges for special mention, winger and ace kicker Craig Parker must be given credit for his accurate place kicking which kept his team in the game in the first period.
Three well-struck penalties kept the scoreboard ticking over, providing a platform for the Border raids of the second half.
Living off crumbs for most of the first 40 minutes, Biggar took over in a whirlwind opening to the second period, running in four tries to supplement the first half effort of winger Chris McKeand.
Solid support allied to poor home tackling ensured a win on the road, as wave after wave of attacks washed over the home defence.
The pick of the touchdowns came when Parker cross kicked for full back Murray Thomson to stroll over the try line.
McKeand added his second, stand off Sam Muir looked like he was a regular in the slot and had the honour of picking up the fourth try for the precious try bonus point.
Lock Stuart Coubrough put the final nail in Grammar's coffin, though hooker Niall Shannon had the last word with a late consolation try for the homesters, his second of the game, but too late to affect the outcome.
Parker added three conversions to prove his worth in a team who look like they have rediscovered their form and self belief.
Look out Souters is the warning from the Biggar club.
