Michael Scott - in charge of the Peebles game on Saturday.

WACKY whistler Michael Scott was back in Tweeddale at the weekend – and again brought with him some mayhem and mystery.

Scott – dubbed the Wing Wizard after his tendency to stick to a touchline during games – grabbed the headlines earlier this season after offering to repay his match fee following a Vale of Leithen game.

And on Saturday he was at it again, sending off Peebles coach David McGinlay for fetching a ball that had gone out of play.

The madcap middleman from Edinburgh, who is a category 4B referee, is one of the regulars on the East of Scotland fixture list.

And is highly regarded by league officials.

But his tendency to get decisions wrong and flash the occasional red card has demoted him to bottom of the table with Peeblesshire players.

Peebles boss Mark Lamb told us: “Referees always get a bit of a hard time for the occasional mistake, but the blunders Michael Scott makes go beyond a joke.

“He sent off our coach for running from the technical area to retrieve a ball – does this mean we need ballboys for every game from now on?”

It remains unclear if Lamb has also been reported by the ref for remarks he made following Saturday’s defeat.

We asked Mr Scott for his opinion of Saturday’s game.

He told us: “A report has been sent to the SFA and that is it as far as I’m concerned. I’m not allowed to discuss the matter any further.”

But the grey-haired chartered surveyor was allowed to discuss the howlers he made on his last visit to Innerleithen.

After allowing a clearly offside goal to stand then following it up by sending off a Vale player, he admitted he was in the wrong.

And offered to refund his match fee.

Vale secretary Alex Currie said: “When I asked him how much he was due he said he didn’t want anything. He said he didn’t deserve paying.

“He pulled the two team captains and secretaries aside after our match to apologise for his performance.”

Mr Scott is back in the Borders this week to take charge of the Selkirk against Coldstream league clash.

That game at Yarrow Park kicks off at 2 p.m.
