PEEBLES’ slump in form continued against Tynecastle, who ran out convincing winners at the end of the day in this Tyreman East of Scotland League first division match at Whitestone Park last Saturday.
In fact, Tynecastle’s winning margin could so easily have been a lot more than two goals, although Peebles didn’t make the most of their scoring opportunities as visiting keeper John Gilbertson hardly had to make a save during the entire 90 minutes.
Tynecastle were the first to show when, from out on the left, Benji Antoni sent in a cross-cum-shot from 18 yards that was well saved by the diving Darren Walker at the near post.
Peebles immediately posed a threat when, after some good leading up work by Kevin Robertson and Paul Devlin, Andrew Martin sent over a right wing cross that packed out Kerr Dodds, who despatched the ball narrowly past the Tynecastle left hand post with a blistering shot on the volley from 12 yards.
Tynecastle opened the scoring after seven minutes when the diving Walker could only parry a Robbie Arthur shot from 18 yards into the path of the in-rushing Ross Allum, who calmly slotted the ball home from close range at an acute angle.
Shortly afterwards, following a hefty Walker clearance, Dodds pounced onto the loose ball before sending in a shot from 20 yards, which was comfortably saved by Gilbertson.
Peebles were trying their best to make an impression on the Tynecastle defence, but from a Mark Brown left wing cross, Chris Graham could only send the ball harmlessly over the Tynecastle crossbar.
Back again came Peebles with a Martin free kick from the right picking out Gareth Thom, who missed the target with his attempted header from six yards.
Tynecastle continued to pose the bigger threat as, after a neat build up involving Antoni and David Keogh, Allum sent the ball just inches wide of the far Peebles left hand post.
Tynecastle added a second goal just before half time when Ross Allum made a menacing run into the Peebles box before h beat a helpless Walker with a cracking angular shot from 16 yards.
Tynecastle were the first to show after the break when Walker tipped a Stephen McKenzie shot from 18 yards around his left hand post with a splendid two handed diving save at full stretch.
Peebles were reduced to ten men in the 53rd minute after substitute Michael Moffat was sent off for a stamping tackle on Steven Sives.
Tynecastle continued on the attack as, from an Antoni cross, Summers seemed almost certain to score with a low shot from 10 yards until the ball clipped the outside edge of the Peebles right hand post.
Moments later, Peebles Assistant Manager, Rab Paget, was sent to the stand after giving the referee a piece of his mind.
With 13 minutes remaining, one of the best Peebles efforts of the second half came from Martin, who made an excellent run into the Tynecastle box before blasting the ball narrowly over the crossbar with a fizzing angular shot from 16 yards.
