THERE was major disappointment over Hartreemill around 4.30 on Saturday night.

The dark clouds, which had hung over the ground all afternoon added to the gloom of a dismal day for the Biggar club.

There had been high hopes that Biggar would get the win over Selkirk and go back into Premiership 1, but on the day, Selkirk dominated to win 15-0 to be promoted and the big home support had little to complain about.

“The best team won on the day, it was just not our day, “ said spokesman Al Stewart.

Biggar were magnanimous in their congratulations to Selkirk.

“Aaron Collins (coach) came over shook our hands,” said Selkirk Rugby Director Dennis Henderson. “And they also congratulated the players.”

Biggar could not complain for on a day of torrential rain and galeforce winds, Selkirk played the conditions better. And despite huge support from the touchline, Biggar made heavy weather against a Selkirk side, which was more focused on the day.

There was joy at The Gytes, where Peebles beat Livingston to ensure promotion into Premiership 2 although, like Selkirk, they missed out on the title.

That went to Gala after their bonus-try win over Ellon at Netherdale.

But while Selkirk moved, Premiership 2 will remain very competitive next season with no fewer than four Borders clubs competing – Gala, Peebles, Jed-Forest and Kelso.
