PEEBLES’ golden girls narrowly failed to regain their national netball crown this week.

The High School’s S2 girls won five matches on their way to the finals at Linwood Sports Centre.

And despite leading throughout almost all of the match were finally defeated by a golden goal.

Coach Linda Nicholson said: “The girls are absolutely gutted.

“They played extremely well and it was just some bad luck that saw them beaten.

“We were all a bit tearful at the end, but we’ll be back to have another go next year.”

Peebles and Craigmount High were locked on 29 points each after the regulation four ten-minute periods.

And even after extra time the two teams were tied on 33 points.

But the Scottish Schools Cup was won on a golden goal ruling – where the first team to score wins.

Linda added: “The girls did really well to win the Scottish Schools Cup in S1 and can feel proud to have almost done it again this year.

“We played a lot of tough games to reach the final.”

The team played regional qualifier matches before beating St Ninian’s Hsby 25 goals to 12 in the quarter-final and Robert Gordons by 27 goals to 17 in the semi-final.

The Peebles team was the only junior team at the championships to reach the final two years running.

The team was:

Caillie Douce (Vice-Capt) Goal defence;

Louise Young (Goal shooter);

Mhairi Imlah (Wing attack);

Georgia-Pawlak (Centre);

Ellie Murray (Wing defence);
