Race is on for Three Bridges
By David Knox
THE PACE in Peebles will pick up on Sunday on with the annual Three Bridges Race.
Leading athletes from all over Scotland will mix with local joggers and schoolchildren for a highly-competitive afternoon of racing beside the Tweed.
As well as the coveted open handicap race over three miles, organizers also host a youths’ 1.5-mile handicap race, primary school championships for boys and girls, and the not-so-quick team race.
Kingsland School will be looking to retain both the girls and boys Tweeddale Primary championships.
But last year’s winner of the Maureen Smith Memorial Trophy for the open youths’ handicap, Alex Campbell, won’t be retaining her crown as she has now moved up to the seniors.
Co-organiser of the event Paul Spence told the Peeblesshire News: “Whatever happens in the youths it will prove to be a highly competitive race, with the standard of runners increasing each year.
“The popular event in the youth calendar is always certain to attract the up-and-coming stars of tomorrow.”
The George Pennel Challenge Shield, along with a medal and £100, is awaiting the winner of the senior three-mile open race.
Galashiels’ national hill runner Euan Jardine will face stiff competition to retain his crown over the two-circuit course.
But the Tweed Green event is more than just a day of athletics.
Mr Spence added: “The Beltane Fete is scheduled to start at 1.30pm to provide fun, food and enjoyment for locals and visitors alike.
“There is a variety of stalls including funfair rides, local organizations and charities as well as Peebles Silver band providing musical treats for the afternoon.”
The final event of the afternoon is the popular team race – which the Peeblessshire News won in 2006 – and attracts the not-so-serious athletes from around the area.
Local running coach Gregor Nicholson said: “There will be a big
entry in the senior and youths races and we hope a few teams will make the team race just as competitive.
“We welcome joggers of all ages to get into a team of four and give it a go.”
Racing comes under starter’s orders at 2 p.m. with entertainment throughout the afternoon.
