Stacey adds GB title
By David Knox
SPRINTER Stacey Downie continued her race for the top with a UK Under-23s title at the weekend.
The 21-year-old from West Linton added to her two Scottish age-group golds earlier this month with victory in the 200 metres at Bedford.
Stacey cruised through her heat on Saturday to line up against the best young sprinters from the home nations.
And despite blustery conditions still managed to run the half-lap in an impressive 24.9 – more than a metre ahead of Portsmouth’s Ellen Howarth-Brown and Birchfield Harrier Kayo Titiloye.
Coach Charlie Russell, who traveled down for the race, told the Peeblesshire News: “Stacey showed great technique and strength to claim her fifth gold medal of the season.
“I feel she still has much more to give this season and believe she is becoming a real contender for the Commonwealth Games in 2010.”
