Double-header weekend for Peeblesshire athletes
By David Knox
PEEBLESSHIRE athletes face a busy couple of days with two Borders meetings being staged this weekend.
The Scottish Games Association hosts a special youth meeting tomorrow at Hawick.
And Borders Athletics govern Kelso Games on Sunday.
Ryan Laidlaw (22) from Cardrona, who won the youths’ 200 metres at Tweedbank last weekend, heads the field of the 10-12 years 90 metres tomorrow at Hawick.
The 11-year-old Junior Moorfoot is also hoping to chase glory in the same age group’s 200 metres and 400 metres.
But with £100 purses for all of the youths’ seven races plus heat-wining bonuses on offer there are strong fields at Volunteer Park.
In the six heats of the youths’ 13-15 years 90 metres Faye Nicholson (12.5) from Peebles, Innerleithen pair Fuzzy Mitchell (12.5) and Sean Grant (16) as well as Mhari Imlah (16) and Stuart Mullins (17), both from Peebles, will all have to work hard to qualify for the final.
And in the senior 90 metres Isiah Symonds (6.5), originally from Innerleithen, runs for the first time with the adults.
Kelso boasts a full programme of both senior and youths’ events the following day at Poynder Park.
And battling it out in the senior 100 metres are husband-and-wife sprinters Gregor (17) and Linda (23) Nicholson.
Innerleithen’s Ron Sutherland (26.5) also competes in the eight heats of the sprint.
But the local athletes face some strong opposition from back-markers Greig Turnbull (3) from Jedburgh, Czech Michael Barvik (2) and Beltane winner Glyn Davies (6).
The full programme of athletics at Kelso starts at 2pm on Sunday while Hawick’s Youth Games begin on Saturday at 1pm.
