Edinburgh City 8 v 0 Peebles FC

Peebles went down to Edinburgh City in an Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup first round tie that produced a game of two contrasting halves at Meadowbank Stadium last Saturday.

Peebles certainly more than held their own in a scoreless first half and could so easily have taken the lead at one stage before City ran riot in the last 18 minutes.

Peebles keeper Willie Turner brought off a couple of fine saves to foil Paul Taylor and Robbie Ross in the early stages while at the other end, after a neat Peebles build up, Craig Dilworth fired the ball just over the City crossbar with a blistering shot on the volley from 20 yards.

Shortly afterwards, Turner tipped a John Niven effort over the Peebles crossbar with a splendid one-handed save before Peebles’ Michael Holness replied with a right wing cross that picked out Darren Thomson who sent in a shot from 12 yards that was well saved by City keeper Duncan Monteith.

Peebles came back again with Thomson passing the ball to Colin Jack who sent it narrowly over the City crossbar with a pile driver from 25 yards.

Play continued to rage from end to end with Monteith thwarting Holness with a good save while just before half time, from a Niven right wing cross, Danny Munro was just off target with a flashing header from 10 yards.

Then Peebles almost caught City napping just 30 seconds after the break when, after a swift breakaway, Monteith foiled Thomson with an excellent two-handed diving save.

Moments later Peebles came close to taking the lead as Peter Shearlaw just missed the target with a terrific free kick attempt from 25 yards.

But then, at the other end, Turner tipped a cracking 25 yards shot from Robbie Ross around his right hand post with a splendid two-handed diving save.

City finally broke the deadlock after 55 minutes when the diving Turner could only parry a Robbie Ross shot into the path of Kenny Ross before he squared the ball to Jordan Hall, who promptly slammed it home from six yards.

City then added a second goal just three minutes later when, after pouncing onto a mistake in the Peebles defence, Paul Taylor coolly chipped the ball into the far right hand corner of the Peebles net from 18 yards.

Peebles replied with Michael Mair being narrowly off target with a blockbuster from 30 yards before City notched a third goal after 72 minutes.

After latching onto a Niven through ball, Robbie Ross coolly slipped the ball past an exposed Turner from 16 yards. Then Turner brought off a good save to foil Jordan Caddow before City grabbed a fourth goal after 77 minutes.

Just 60 seconds later City scored their fifth goal when, after a neat build up down the right, Robbie Ross slammed the ball home from close range to notch up his hat trick.

Then City added the sixth goal after 80 minutes when a defence-splitting pass from Hall sent City substitute Steven Mullen racing into the Peebles box. He rounded Turner and tapped the ball into the vacant Peebles net from close range.

City rose to seventh heaven just three minutes later when a Drew Calladine left wing cross to the far post picked out Jordan Caddow who found the roof of the Peebles net with a spectacular diving header from eight yards.

Two minutes from full time City made it eight when, from a Niven right wing cross, City substitute Steven Clee found the Peebles net with a well-directed glancing header from ten yards.
