Off to a flier
Tweeddale Rovers Colts 4 v 2 Gala United
Tweeddale Rovers got the season off to a dream start with a well-earned win over Gala United.
Cameron 'Flapper' Young has opted to give up on his dream of representing Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics, by changing his boxing gloves for goalie gloves.
Other new signings were school girl pin ups Reece Evans, Rhuridh McNaught and Nick Rodgers, who all made their competitive debuts on Saturday.
The game started at a rather subdued pace, with Tweeddale having the majority of possession, but neither team really threatening either goalie.
But it was the visitors who made the breakthrough.
A miss timed clearance let the Gala front man clean through on goal. Young came out close the angle, but he was beaten by a clinical finish.
Chances were few and far between, but Tweeddale still had the lion's share of possession, and Thomson could have equalised soon before the break, when he was found at the back post from a cross from Evans, but the tireless midfielder mis-timed his header.
Soon into the second half, young Rory Brands had to be withdrawn for merchandising commitments. Brands was off to film his latest advert for Loreal, with the youngster being announced as the new face of the shampoo product.
In his place was Simon Warren, who turned down a multi million pound contract to play in Major League Soccer in the US to continue to play for his boyhood heroes Tweeddale.
It was soon all square, when a Thomson back heeled his free kick to Blair chopper II Moffat, who fired the ball like a damn buster over the diving gala keeper and into the corner.
This gave Tweeddale the confidence they needed and they were soon in front. Good plays down the left from McNaught, sent aging Tam Mcfadden clean through on goal.
Despite McFadden’s need for a zimmer frame of the pitch, on the pitch he just had enough to hold of the defenders tracking back to fire past the oncoming goalie.
Moffat made his final changes of the game bringing on Ingils and Mitchell for Thomson and McFadden.
In a off the ball incident, one of Gala's players got sent off for foul and abusive language.
Tweeddale were now playing some really nice football, and their flair players were now getting more room to show what they can really do, with more space and their opponents tiring.
Reece Evans soon made it three, when he picked up the ball on the left and cracked a peach of a shot into the top corner. The gala goalie got a hand to it, but the shot was to powerful to keep out.
The game was soon beyond doubt, when sub Simon 'Silent Assassin' Warren blasted his shot from 6 yards out straight at the goalie, luckily for Warren he tapped in the rebound, from a yard out.
Gala pulled a goal back when a free kick from the edge of the 18 yard box took a lucky deflection of Warren’s shoulder, and beat Young in goal.
Soon after that, Gala went down to 9 men, after another player was sent off for a rash challenge against the impressive McNaught.
A great result against difficult opponents and the best possible start for Tweeddale.
