Seven goals after early shock

Leithen Rovers 7 v 1 Langholm

IT wasn’t the ideal start to the season…losing a goal in the opening minutes.

But Leithen Rovers fired a warning shot at the rest of the A Division with an emphatic opening day fightback.

After the initial shaky start they soon got themselves back on level terms when Alan McMath latched onto a Smith pass to coolly finish.

The young striker then doubled his and his teams tally in the 18th minute, scrambling home a Blaikie corner.

The home side were well on top when Gary Hastie had the ball in the net, only for the referee to harshly call for an off-side.

Teenager Aaran Brunton did, however add a third before the interval, firing high into the net from 10 yards.

There was to be no let up in the second half and David Blaikie, who had been causing the visitors problems down the left flank, raced into the box to slide home the fourth.

The man of the moment, Alan 'Speedy' McMath completed his hat-trick on the hour to notch up number 5 for the Rovers.

His strike partner Gary Hastie finally got on the score sheet with a well drilled shot beyond the on rushing keeper.

Hastie should've been celebrating his hat-trick , but once more he was denied, this time for an alleged infringement on the keeper.

Rovers completely dominated this match with Colin Smith and Aaran Brunton dictating the midfield and the tireless running of the front two of Hastie and McMath terrorising the Langholm defence all afternoon.

It came as no surprise that Speedy completed the scoring late on, to round off the proceedings on a fine overall performance by the team.

Leithen Rovers: Crawford, Scott, Hardie (Thompson), Johnston, Laurie. Smith, Brunton, Blaikie, Shek (MacIntyre), McMath & Hastie.
