Rovers fired up to take on rivals Newtown
By David O'Leary
Leithen Rovers will be heading into this weekend on a high after smashing seven past Langholm Legion in their league opener last Saturday.
The game finished 7-1 to Rovers and they next face their opponents from last years Waddell Cup final, Newtown, which Rovers won 5-1 in extra time.
Newly promoted, Newtown, will prove stiff opposition for the Innerleithen side but manager, Neil Gilchrist, believes they’ll have enough class on the day.
He said: “We’ve only played them once and we know they’re quite a physical side but we’ll have enough on the day.
“I’m really pleased after last week because we were one-nil down after fifteen minutes and to come back and win the way we did was fantastic.
“The players responded well and kept playing to the end. However, that was last week and we are fired up and ready to do the same this week.”
Another local team that will be hoping to continue their good form this weekend are Tweeddale Rovers. They ran out 4-2 winners against Gala United last Saturday in front of a large Kerfield crowd.
This weekend they face Langholm Boswell away.
Manager Jim Moffatt, said: “It was a good showing from such a young team with only four players over 20-years old in the first eleven.
“It will be a hard game on Saturday against an experienced side but if we put our passing game together then we may be in for another three points.”
