Peebles eye up their first points
By David Knox
PEEBLES are poised to pick up their first points of the season.
The so-called whipping boys of the East Premier League ran title contenders Heriot-Watt University close last Saturday in the Alex Jack Cup.
And Gary French’s improving young side face fellow promotion candidates Easthouses Lily, who have lost their opening three matches, at Whitestone Park tomorrow.
The manager told the Peeblesshire News: “We’re at full strength and we’ll certainly have a go at Easthouses.
“It is a big game for us and I’m hopeful they boys can raise their game once again.
“I was proud of the way they fought last Saturday, they gave me everything and that’s all I can ask of them.”
Peebles will be strengthened for the Premier League match by the return of Mark McLeod, Ross Glass and Davie Johnstone.
Vale of Leithen face the first of a cup double-header against Edinburgh City.
Lindsay Rathie’s team entertains the city side tomorrow in the Image Printers Cup.
And seven days later they clash again at Victoria Park – this time in the SFA South Regional Cup.
Rathie hopes to cause a shock and also keep 11 players on the pitch following the five red cards in their opening three games.
He told us: “Our discipline has been terrible but we need to keep 11 players on the park to stand any chance against Edinburgh City.
“The pressure is off for the first time this season so I hope we can relax and show everyone what we are capable of.”
Vale will be without Steven Notman and Greg Shortreed as well as the suspended Ron Fleming.
And they still await international clearance for striker Gerry Rossi.
Peebles’ home league match with Easthouses and Vale’s cup clash at Victoria Park both kick off at 2.30pm.
