GOLDEN girl Stacey Downie completed a memorable hat-trick at the weekend.

The 21-year-old won the senior 200 metres Scottish crown to add to her previous Under 20 and Under 23 titles over the past two years.

And she rounded off a memorable weekend at Pitreavie Stadium by also claiming a bronze medal in the 100 metres.

The sports science student recorded a time of 24.77 seconds to hold of the challenge from fellow international runner Gemma Nichol to break the 200 metres tape.

Stacey told the Peeblesshire News: “The time was good considering the rain and wind, and I’m delighted to finally be the Scottish champion.”

Stacey recently moved to new coach Bill Walker following the retirement of Innerleithen sprint guru Charlie Russell.

And she feels the change hasn’t slowed her down.

Stacey added: “I’m enjoying the change and it’s nice to be training in different surroundings.”

The weekend’s Scottish championships also turned into a meeting to remember for newly-turned 15-year-old Faye Nicholson.

Fresh from celebrating her birthday the Peebles High pupil shocked the long-jump field by beating her older opponents to claim the silver medal.

The teenager, who also claimed a second place at the recent Scottish Under 17s Championships, only went to Pitreavie after former national champion Darren Ritchie invited her.

Faye told us: “I only made the age to compete by four days so it came as a big surprise get a medal.

“There wasn’t any pressure as I was just there to gain some experience so I just went out and enjoyed myself.”

Faye will compete at next weekend’s inter regional competition for the Scottish Borders at Carlisle.
