Glasgow University 0 v 1 Vale of Leithen

A goal seven minutes from time by super sub Greig Shortreed sealed Vale's place in the next round of the Scottish Cup.

Celebrations at the final whistle however, were slightly tempered after the serious injury sustained during the first half by midfielder Andy Martin which led to the game being held up for half an hour while paramedics were called to the scene.

Although it was once again a one goal margin of victory for Vale following their visit to the same venue five weeks previously in the South Region Cup, this was a much tighter game as Glasgow, showing several changes in their line-up, came at their opponents from the first whistle.

As expected, it was danger man Jamie Kerr in the thick of it, as he set up Joe Watson for a crack at goal, before hooking a shot narrowly wide himself.

Vale replied with a Steven Notman free kick, awarded after Aaron Somerville was hauled down at the edge of the area by Callum Tevendale, which drifted inches over the top.

In the 31st minute, Martin was clattered from behind by University defender Ross Montgomery, who was red carded for the tackle by referee Andrew McWilliam.

Although a rash challenge, there was no suggestion that Montgomery had intended to hurt his opponent, but the Peebles youngster had fallen awkwardly.

After examination by the medical team from both dugouts, an ambulance was called to take Martin to hospital, where his injury was thankfully found to be less serious than feared.

When play eventually resumed, the closing quarter of an hour of the first half was unsurprisingly muted, but following the interval it was end to end stuff as both teams committed to attack.

Dewar stabbed the ball wide from a Ryan McManus corner, while Martin's replacement Chris Graham sent a header just over from a Ross McManus cross.

Strong running down the right by University's Kwabena Arthur led to a cross which was flicked on by Nicholas Holt, but Vale's Gavin Tainsh was alert to clear the danger from the goal mouth as Kerr hovered.

As the game progressed Vale encountered a hitherto unseen problem, as University goalkeeper Iain Mackay pulled off several outstanding saves.

Mackay spread himself brilliantly to deny Notman twice, before denying Somerville, after he had been put through by a quick free kick from Notman.

The keeper blotted his copybook as a poor kick out landed at the feet of Somerville, but Holt popped up to clear the striker's shot off the line.

Mackay again blocked superbly as Ryan McManus was put through by Somerville, but seven minutes from time, Vale broke the deadlock.

Shortreed ran on to a defence-splitting pass from Somerville, rounding Mackay and slipping the ball home from a tight angle.
