Local sides ready for cup kick-off
By David O'Leary
BORDERS amateur football sides gear up for action in the South Cup this weekend.
Peeblesshire sides face tough encounters with local rivals from Galashiels and Stow.
A League Leithen Rovers face C League side Gala Hotspur away at 1.30pm.
Last weekend the Innerleithen side disposed of West Barns Star 5-0 to record their first away victory of the season.
They’ll be hoping to continue that run of form into this weekend, as they hope to reclaim the cup they won two years previous.
Manager Neil Gilchrist said: “We had a good result last weekend even though we didn’t play too well. We’re in a good run of form in the league this year but we won’t be taking Gala lightly.
“They’ll fancy their chances I’m sure against us and it’ll be good to meet up with our ex-player Craig Lawrie, who was in the team when we won it. It should be a good game because it’s winner takes all.”
League B strugglers Peebles Ams face the none too pleasant task of an away tie against League A table-toppers and present cup-holders, Gala Rovers.
Peebles Ams have only collected a point in the league so far this year and manager John Meikle will need a serious effort from his players to come away with the win.
The last of the local derbies to take place this weekend is League C leaders Tweeddale Rovers at home against League A side Stow at 1.30pm.
Rovers saw off Chirnside 5-2 last weekend and manager Jim Moffatt sees this weekend as a good chance to view how far his side have come.
He said: “We had to come from behind to win the game last weekend but it was a credit to the lads to come back into it and carry off the three points.
“I only wish that we could start the game the way we end it each week but I’m more than happy with how the lads are progressing.
“We’ll have to be on top of our game to get a result against Stow and it’ll be good to see how far we’ve come and how far we’ve still to go.”
