Rovers back home
By David O'Leary
Last weekend was eventful for the three Peeblesshire sides competing in the South Cup.
A League Leithen Rovers thumped C League Gala Hotspur 5-0 to progress into the last 16 of the competition they won two seasons ago.
It’s back to the league again this weekend for Rovers as they face strugglers Pencaitland at home at 2pm. This will be their first home game since their league opener due to away fixtures and call-offs due to unfavourable weather.
Manager Neil Gilchrist said: “It’ll be good to get back at home after playing away so much and we’re looking to a good game.
“Last weekend was plainsailing to be honest. We were slow to start but once we got going it was one-way traffic. I was very happy with how the lads applied themselves in wet conditions.
“We won’t take Pencaitland for granted this weekend though because we’re well aware that teams at the bottom raise their games against those at the top. If we stick to the game plan and keep our shape though we’ll be alright.”
Leithen Rovers welcome back the experienced Matty Forsyth this weekend after Chris Wilson left the club to join Tweeddale Rovers.
League B basement boys Peebles Ams found themselves on the end of a 6-1 hiding from League A table-toppers Gala Rovers last weekend.
Things don’t improve much for them either this weekend as they face B League leaders Kelso Thistle at home at 1.30pm.
Top of League C, Tweeddale Rovers ran League A side Stow close last weekend losing 4-3 at home.
They face Tweedmouth away this Saturday at 2pm.
Manager Jim Moffatt said: “We’ll have to lift ourselves after last weekend because Tweedmouth away is always a very tricky fixture.
“We can take great pride from our performance against Stow because we gave them a real hard game.
“We’re a young side who learned a lot from the game and there are not many teams around whose oldest back four player is only 20 years old!”
