Luxury doesn't have to mean slow

When you think of luxury cars, you immediately think of the smooth ride and amazing levels of comfort you experience. This is what luxury cars are all about. It's what we pay the extra money for and is why once you have driven one, it is sometimes hard to go back to normal cars.

The luxury car market is filled with cars promising the most comfortable ride ever. All sorts of new technologies are used to improve the quality of the journey. Then there are the pioneering safety features that are often first implemented in the luxury car market. Features such as power steering, airbags and ABS breaks were all first used commercially in top of the range executive and luxury models.

But is it quick?

What you perhaps don't necessarily think of is the speed and engine capability that luxury models offer. Sure, most luxury models come with large, powerful engines, but this is usually because they are large cars and need a significant amount of power to get them going. More power also makes driving more comfortable because the engine never has to strain to maintain a speed. However, despite all this, it's difficult to imagine a luxury car with outstanding performance and acceleration. One that will really knock your socks off. That is until now and the intervention of Lexus.

The perfect combination

The Lexus IS F comes with everything you would expect from a top-end Lexus. It has ABS, adaptive cruise control, brake assist system and electronic brakeforce distribution, but it also comes with a little something special. It accelerates from zero to 62 miles per hour in just 4.8 seconds and has a maximum speed of 168 miles per hour. Those are the kind of numbers you would ordinarily associate with a high performance sports car or roadster. To have that kind of speed and acceleration and still offer all the comfort of a classic Lexus sedan makes this a very special car indeed.

What does this mean on the road?

What this means from a practical point of view is that you can be cruising along the motorway, using the adaptive cruise control, feeling about as comfortable as you can get behind the wheel. Should you need it, however, you can put your foot down and the explosive acceleration will get you out of almost any kind of trouble in a matter of seconds. This is good to know when you are behind the wheel.

So, if you've been thinking about getting a luxury car but have also been tempted by something a little racier, then it would seem both your boxes have been ticked by the same vehicle. Luxury and speed combined - it's quite a combination.
