James Bond’s killer classic car collection
James Bond’s car collection is more impressive than most. While the majority of drivers have a Lada Riva, a Reliant Robin, or something equally horrifying lurking shamefully in the past, 007 has never got behind the wheel of anything quite as embarrassing.
In fact, over the years, Britain’s coolest secret agent has driven a stunning array of cars. From Aston Martin to Bentley, BMW to Lotus, Mercedes-Benz to Rolls-Royce, Bond’s ability to get behind the wheel of classic after classic is the envy of car enthusiasts around the world.
With the release of “Skyfall”, Daniel Craig’s Bond again finds himself in control of a collection of desirable motors, but are they as cool as the oldies?
To mark the release of the new movie, we’ve brought together five of Bond’s very best cars for you to feast your eyes upon.
Aston Martin DB5
As featured in Goldfinger, Thunderball, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale and Skyfall, the DB5 is the quintessential Bond car. Its smoke screen, pop-up weaponry, rotating number plates and bullet shield, along with its classic British styling, make the DB5 the best ever.
Lotus Esprit
The Esprit driven by Roger Moore in The Spy Who Loved Me makes it onto the list by virtue of being A CAR THAT TURNS INTO A SUBMARINE. If that’s not quite cool enough, it just so happens to be A SUBMARINE EQUIPPED WITH ANTI-AIRCRAFT MISSILES. If you’re still not impressed, there’s something wrong with you.
Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante
Never mind a CD player, electric windows and central locking, Bond’s V8 Vantage from The Living Daylights came with outrigger skis, a rocket booster, missiles and lasers in the hubcaps. Talk about extras.
BMW 750iL
For a rental car (Bond picks this bad boy up from Q at an Avis station in Germany) the 750iL from Tomorrow Never Dies packs one hell of a punch. Armed with missile launchers, caltrops, self-inflating tyres and practically indestructible bodywork, the custom Beemer can also be remotely driven, which Bond takes advantage of to drive it off the roof of a car park.
Aston Martin V12 Vanquish
Considering it was invisible, the V12 Vanquish looked amazing. Bond’s motor in Die Another Day was equipped with a cloaking device that made it effectively invisible at the push of a button. But when a car looks as good as the Vanquish, why would you ever want to press it?
Not everyone is as lucky as Bond when it comes to cars. But if you’re keen on the classics, bagging one is easier – and probably cheaper – than you might think.
