MUSICAL labels – love them or hate them, are used all the time. ‘Classical’, ‘jazz’, ‘folk’, ‘rock’, ‘world music’ and many more; they provide a convenient shorthand way of classifying different musical styles.

But just as many music-lovers will happily listen to music of different styles, so there are musicians who enjoy exploring and blurring the boundaries between styles, in music that is often referred to as ‘fusion’ or ‘crossover’. A fine example of this will be evident at the next Music in Peebles concert.

Kosmos Ensemble is a group of three musicians who set out to re-define those boundaries, bringing together influences from many countries, cultures and musical forms into a blend that is uniquely their own. All the members of the group are classically trained and share a passion for performing with, and learning from, musicians from around the world. Harriet Mackenzie is an international violin soloist and chamber musician with a particular interest in contemporary music; Meg Hamilton is a viola player specialising in world and folk music styles, including Celtic, Romanian, Greek and Middle Eastern, whilst Serbian-born Miloš Milivojevi? is a classical accordionist who especially enjoys Tango and Balkan music.

From their extensive travels, research and performing experience, Kosmos have crafted a programme in which sophisticated jazz glides magically into wild Gypsy fiddling; emotive Jewish music leads into hot-blooded Tango; Arabic melody gives way to free improvisation. However you label your own musical tastes, this concert is for you!

Kosmos have performed internationally to great acclaim, notably London's Southbank Centre, the Millennium Centre in Wales, international festivals such as Ripon and Jersey and tours in Poland, Italy, Greece and live performances on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.

During their visit to Peebles, Kosmos will also be participating in the expanding outreach programme of Music in Peebles by presenting music workshops in Kingsland Primary School and Peebles High School and by performing a concert in Peebles Nursing Home. Previous concerts in the Home have been greatly enjoyed not only by residents of the Home but also by those of local sheltered housing who have come along for the occasion. The outreach programme receives generous support from local businesses whose advertisements appear in the concert programmes. Music in Peebles is very grateful to them and also to Enterprise Music Scotland for their financial support.

The Eastgate concert is open to everyone and starts at 7.30pm on Tuesday, November 3.

Tickets costing £14 for adults (or £7 if accompanying a child under 12) are on sale from the Eastgate Theatre Box Office (01721 725777); admission is free for all school students and for members of Music in Peebles. Full details of the concert, and more about the artists, can be found at www.musicinpeebles.org.uk, together with information about Music in Peebles and how to apply for membership.
