TALENTED young performers Douglas Holligan and Maddy Kearns presented a brilliant programme of piano and song at the Serenata concert on Sunday.

Maddy’s set of songs spanned four centuries and carried the audience through an emotional journey of romance, grief and joy with humour. She has a powerful voice with rounded tone which could fill the room.

Douglas’ recital focused on major piano pieces often used as an encore. But these were not short extras. The huge Rachmaninov preludes seemed to use every key on the Steinway.

Ravel was lyrical and rhythmic. Brahms and Chopin, fulsome and flowing. Douglas’ love of the music and the piano comes across in performance and the audience loved every note.

What a privilege to hear two young musicians of such quality and poise. We will surely hear more of Douglas and Maddy.
