PATSY and Murray Campbell opened the Serenata concert in Peebles with a fascinating demonstration of early music played on a variety of unusual instruments.

Starting with music from the 12th century with Patsy on a portative organ and Murray on a gemshorn - made from the horn of an ox - they took us through into renaissance times on several different instruments.

Beautiful to hear and interesting to learn about. A jump forward in time as four wind players from Peebles Orchestra performed Dvorak’s 8th symphony - albeit drastically reduced.

A lovely arrangement which really works was followed by the opening of Beethoven’s 5th symphony. Dvorak and Beethoven may have turned in their graves but we had fun!

Lorraine Mulholland is more often at the piano or conducting so it was a joy to hear her sing solo. Her rich mezzo voice well suited her programme, particularly songs from the isles.

The concert ended with a jazz set from Murray and Patsy on piano and bass with John Levine on clarinet and sax - ranging from soulful to sparkling, sending everyone home with a smile on their face.
