TWEED Theatre’s autumn production is a revival of an old favourite - “They Came from Mars and Landed Outside the Farndale Avenue Church Hall in time for the Townswomens’ Guild’s Coffee Morning” - a farce, hilariously and eccentrically odd as its title.

The series of farcical comedies from which this play comes, revolves around the premise of the Townswomens’ Guild Dramatic Society attempting performances on various themes. Tweed Theatre mounted a production of a murder mystery in the series a few years ago to packed houses.

The minutely observed spoof chronicles the ladies’ attempt at a sci-fi thriller about a Martian Invasion of Earth. Ludicrous set pieces, bizarre special effects, Hilda’s stomach troubles, lost lines and the problem of an intimate love scene lacking one of its two protagonists are just some of the difficulties that add up to a surreal workshop on how not to present a play.

Above the mayhem, Mrs Reece, chair of the Dramatic Society, sails like a guiding star and steers the hapless company through the perils of amateur drama while, simultaneously, organising the flower arranging awards and a raffle.

Tweed Theatre especially encourages anyone interested in any aspect of production. For this play, it requires four women and one man and any number of backstage helpers.

Readings are being held in the Masonic Hall, Northgate, Peebles, on Tuesday, February 10, at 7pm ,with further readings and auditions on Tuesday, February 17, also at 7pm and again in the Masonic Hall.
