TWO Peeblesshire restaurants are serving up a treat by adding locally-sourced lamb to their menus.

The Green Tree in Peebles and the Gordon Arms at West Linton were taking part in a national campaign and celebration to get more consumers eating Scotch lamb.

Waiting staff from the restaurants were donning Scotch lamb aprons and t-shirts and promoting the tasty meat. The restaurants werel also serving Scotch lamb dishes, and have committed to having locally-sourced lamb on their menus going forward.

The event organised by NFU Scotland, ties in with Quality Meat Scotland’s (QMS) Love Scotch lamb weekend over September 5 and 6. The two-month long campaign is aimed at raising the profile of Scotch lamb and encouraging people to become 'Lambassadors’ and help spread the word.

Three other Borders restaurants - Burts and The Townhouse in Melrose, and the Auld Cross Keys in Denholm are also joining in the campaign.

Regional manager Kerry Barr said: “Many people don’t realise how diverse Scotch lamb can be and how easy it is to cook, and by promoting dishes through these restaurants we hope that consumers will realise this and start to buy Scotch lamb.

“The Scottish Borders has a huge population of sheep, larger than most other areas of Scotland and farmers are rightly so proud of what they produce and want to showcase this to consumers.

“It’s great that we have commitment from these restaurants that they will put locally-sourced lamb on their menus. There will be recipe cards and information available throughout Saturday and Sunday which members of the public can take away to make it easy for them to make tasty Scotch lamb dishes at home and support Scottish farmers.”
