HUGE electric signage planned for a new coffee shop at an iconic Peebles building has prompted concern from townsfolk.
Community leaders are delighted that Veitch's Corner will no longer be empty - but worried what will happen when it becomes a Costa Coffee outlet.
Peebles Community Council planning chairman Crick Carleton said there was much detail in the application that warranted further scrutiny.
He added there were concerns about the upgrading of the exterior of the building, including the repair and maintenance of the Veitch's signage which forms a key element in its heritage value.
The community council's acting chairman Lawrie Hayworth told members at last week's meeting he was keeping his fingers crossed that all will be well.
"I am hoping that the Civic Society will scrutinise the plans in detail," he said. "They want to have a big electric banner in the shop.
"It's going to be a trade off but anything is better than nothing - it's good that there is going to be progress on Veitch's Corner."
The Veitch's Corner building, which is now owned by Edinburgh-based AKL Portfolio, has been empty since 2006.
Costa Coffee are planning to cater for up to 78 people. Listed Building Consent application will soon be considered by Scottish Borders Council.
