THEY will not reap the benefit of it themselves but five local teenagers are determined to see a new building for Peebles High School.
A quintet of girls from the 1,500-pupil comprehensive school stated their case for a self-contained facility at a meeting of Peebles Community Council last week.
Caledonia Bhatia, Alex Pender, Briony Farrell, Rowan Espie and Sarah Eggleton had all prepared short speeches.
The fivesome, all members of the student council, stressed the importance of improving facilities at an education establishment that has suffered with piecemeal development as it has struggled to cope with increasing numbers.
"We do realise the new school won't be built while we are here but we would like to get the ball rolling on this," the girls told community councillors.
"They keep telling us the maths building is going to fall down. It is still here and we are grateful for the new PE facilities but we believe we need something new to inspire us."
Community council acting chairman Lawrie Hayworth said: "We recognise and value the High School - for its academic achievements and its value to the community."
One of the council's younger members Shona Haslam backed the girls and said: "When I was at the High School they kept telling us the maths building was going to fall down.
Another council member Lesley Morrison suggested it would be a good idea if at least one pupil from the school could attend the community council's monthly meetings.
"It's nice to hear about the school from the horses' mouths and it would be great to get pupils' views on a regular basis. We could rotate it with a different pupil coming to each meeting," she said.
The girls thought Dr Morrison's suggestion a good one with Rowan saying: "I want to do politics at university, so I would certainly be interested in doing that."
