A COUNTER petition in support of a 3G pitch in Peebles was launched this week.

And it has already attracted over 600 signatures in the space of a few days.

Proposals for an all-weather facility at Victoria Park has led to widespread anger and opposition from many organisations and individuals in and around the town.

Last week's Peeblesshire News revealed that a campaign group against the £1.7 million plans have made contact with legal experts in a bid to prevent any development on the common good land.

And they had gathered close to 1700 signatures on a petition (1150 online and 500 paper).

But this week 3G supporters hit back with their own concerted campaign.

Local businessman James Swann posted his online petition on Monday after being frustrated by the stance of Peebles Community Council.

Mr Swann told us: "I felt someone had to respond after the community council were so quick to take sides against the 3G pitch.

"We have had a great response in the first few days - many of these signatures are from parents or coaches who represent a lot of children."

The local football coach's online petition is for anyone who believes a 3G pitch should be built at Victoria Park if no other site can be found.

And Scottish Borders Council has already ruled out several other locations in the town due to size constraints and flood risks.

The local authority has also stated that it isn't considering Innerleithen's Victoria Park or a site at Cardrona.

This week's counter petition has won support from nay in Peeblesshire.

Donna Palacci from Peebles stated: "I do not want Peebles to lose out on this fabulous facility. If Victoria Park is the only option then it has to go there.

"It's just a dogs toilet at the moment anyway."

And Peebles mum Jacqui Abernethy echoed her sentiments. She said: "My son's football is forever being cancelled due to unplayable pitches.

"I think Victoria Park is the perfect place for it... it's not taking up the whole park and it's creating a bit of joy for the the kids."

Fellow Peebles resident Bob Hall believes Victoria Park is an ideal setting for the facility.

He stated: "The benefits are endless. I've seen what it's done for Penicuik and other areas, and let's face it Victoria Park isn't exactly a picturesque place.

"I pass it every day with my dog and think there could be so much more can be done here."
