SCOTTISH Borders Council (SBC) is warning residents that severe gale force winds - which could reach up to 80-90mph in some areas - is likely to cause disruption.

The strongest winds are expected later on this evening and into tomorrow.

An Amber (be prepared) Wind Warning remains in place from 3pm today through to 9am on Tuesday. Around this, a Yellow wind warning is in place until 10am tomorrow morning (Tuesday).

School transport tomorrow morning (Tuesday) may be disrupted and parents should listen to local radio and check the Council’s social media channels to keep updated.

Snow melt is causing some rivers to rise and residents will be updated via the normal flood alerts issued by SEPA.

Jim Fraser, SBC’s Emergency Planning Officer said: “We are continuing to deal with a challenging time with yet another Storm heading our way.

“We are already experiencing high winds in many areas, and the wind is expected to gradually become stronger during today. The strongest winds are expected from later into the evening and into Tuesday.

“Our Emergency Bunker opened at 3pm today and will remain open through the night until 9am tomorrow morning to co-ordinate the multi-agency response to any impact of the high winds.

“Residents should expect travel disruption and difficult driving conditions, so please take extreme care when you are out and about.”

The following roads have been closed and drivers are urged not to ignore road closure signs under ANY circumstances.

They will be continually assessed as the day goes on and will reopen once they have been assessed.

Teviot/Liddesdale

D25/3 Haysike Bridge – closed due to structural damage

D29/3 Falnash - Bowanhill Bridge - closed due to structural damage

Tweeddale

B709 Granites Road (Innerleithen Golf Course north to Colquhar) - closed due to flooding

Whilst driving in high winds you are warned to watch for debris in the road and keep your distance from other cars as strong gusts could push them into your lane of travel, or yours into theirs.
